Listening to BBC Radio 3 yesterday morning, I was moved to contact them to suggest CAG’s Threnody for Walter de la Mare from his Dale and Fell for Strings played by the Guildhall Strings, for a possible Slow Music slot.
Listening to this work, I was delighted by the Suite for Strings which is the final piece of the Dale and Fell CD. I noticed in Louis Foreman’s clever notes that this Suite was completed a year before his death on 12th May 1960, exactly 60 years ago yesterday !
The music is fascinating, and deserves a wider audience. Perhaps I will ask Radio 3 to play ‘A Song of Sleep’ from Suite for Strings, described in the notes as having “no spectres here; Gibbs’ dreams are unclouded and idyllic”.
Dream on, dear Grandpa…..
