English song expert and vocal coach Michael Pilkington recently died aged 96. A key supporter of the Armstrong Gibbs Society, Michael gave his time and knowledge over many decades to bring Gibbs’ songs to a wider audience. He transcribed previously unpublished works, enabling new recordings and performances. He was best known for his editions of English songs and guides which encapsulated the meanings of the songs and suggestions for interpretation. Michael studied at the Guildhall School of Music, then taught English Song there for 30 years. He will be greatly missed by the Society.
